Free training for LTBTQ groups

LGBT HIP is holding a free session for volunteers from LGBTQ groups, who would like to provide LGBTQ awareness training in Brighton and Hove. The course will cover how to deliver effective training, how to engage an audience and overcoming barriers to learning.

By the end of the course, volunteers will have an understanding of how to plan, deliver and evaluate a training session and receive a certificate.

Whether you have delivered training before, or you do not have any previous experience, this will be a fun and participatory course, which will give volunteers skills and confidence in communicating with an audience.

Free Turn2Us training for charities working with people in financial need

Places are available on a three hour workshop, teaching front line workers how to use the Turn2us Benefits Calculator, Grants Search tool and other online information to help people in financial need access benefits, grants and other forms of financial help.

Safety Net have several training courses coming up:

There are two spaces available on the Protective Behaviours training running next week on Monday 12th & Tuesday 13th October. Protective Behaviours is a personal safety and life skill process that teaches the ability to recognise and deal with situations in which we don’t feel safe. It can be used as both an abuse prevention strategy and to address situations such as feeling worried or bullied, as well as promoting good citizenship. The course runs from 10:00am to 4:00pm on both days and costs £90, which includes two fantastic resource workbooks for use when practising PBs after the course. Free Community Works course on analysing data and measuring impact

Community Works are running a workshop for groups and organisations to help them gather better data and analyse it well. It is aimed at groups who are already experienced with monitoring and evaluation.

The workshop will explore monitoring, evaluation and impact through the practical learning of creating a Data Management Strategy. It will examine the benefits of having such a strategy, its concept and contents, and what it might bring to your group. There will also be space to share your experiences in this area with peers.

Confident data gathering can enable your group or organisation to:

  • Tell your story more effectively
  • Join your story up with others
  • Celebrate your successes
  • Develop safe and dignified ways of gathering quality data from service users
  • Capture the ‘real’ experience, essence and difference that your work makes
  • Influence others more effectively

As a participant you will:

  • Explore how organisational values can and should form part of your Data Management Strategy
  • Map your current data management practice against your organisational needs and objectives
  • Identify how you can develop your data management strategy through a range of different approaches including: service user involvement, identification of internal and external data sources, combining data to produce new insights into strategy and service user need, and use of IT within your organisation.

Free training in Monitoring and Evaluation for small groups

This training is organised by Community Works. There are two dates available:

Trainer: Paul Bramwell (training consultant) and Kate Gilchrist (Public Health)

This half-day course is a back to basics for anyone who is involved in or new to monitoring and evaluation, or who wants a refresher to improve the quality of their work. It will also include a demonstration of the Community Insight Tool, which allows you to find, explore and use a wide range of facts and figures at different geographic levels for Brighton and Hove. By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Measure success against the aims and objectives of your organisation
  • Set a baseline against which to monitor and evaluate future work and use the Community Insight Tool to help you do this
  • Set and measure outputs, outcomes and milestones
  • Use different qualitative and quantitative monitoring techniques
  • Use the information you have gathered to critically evaluate your work
  • Begin to convince funders and commissioners of the added value of your work.

Techniques covered will include record keeping, questionnaires and evaluation forms, focus groups, interviewing and other participatory methods of collecting information about your activities or services. There will also be an opportunity to talk about building relationships with your funders.

Who is this course for?
This training is aimed specifically at groups:

  • With an annual income of under £35,000 who are delivering health and well-being activities
  • There is priority booking for those groups whose health and well-being activities support LGBT people, people from BME communities or older people (including intergenerational work)

Trans Awareness training, 20 November

Date: Friday 20 November, 2015

Time: 9.30am-1.00pm

Venue: Stanmer Room, Brighthelm Community Centre, North Road, Brighton, BN1 1YD.

This half day course with the Trans Alliance is aimed at anyone who wants to broaden their understanding of issues faced by transgender, transsexual and other gender-different people. The session is based around interactive exercises, encouraging participants to get involved in thinking through what Trans means and ways to achieve equality and inclusivity in practice. By the end of the session you will have:

  • An appreciation of how sex, gender and sexual orientation interact
  • Improved understanding of Trans identities, terms and language
  • A good grounding in the key laws relating to Trans people
  • Increased awareness of trans issues and ways to be trans inclusive
  • Increased confidence in working with trans colleagues/clients
  • Information about helpful resources.

Free video production workshop for charitable and community groups

Media Trust is running a free video production workshop  for charitable and community groups.

This introductory workshop is designed to help charities and community groups understand how they can turn their stories into short films, and will cover planning, recording and editing. A hands-on learning environment will give practical guidance on using low-cost equipment and techniques that will make videos look professional, even on a low budget.

The workshop is part of Do #SomethingBrilliant, a two year campaign funded by Big Lottery.

There are 10 places available. To apply, contact Reshma for an application form. Places will be allocated to the groups the Media Trust feel will get the most from this opportunity and from the subsequent mentoring available to them following the workshop.

The workshop is aimed at charities and community groups interested in creating their own video content for the web and broadcast platforms like Community Channel. Workshop graduates will be mentored through an assignment to create a short film about the great work they are doing in their community, a film that will inspire others to do something brilliant.

Groups will need to demonstrate that they have access to adequate equipment with which to produce their short film.

Free cookery classes for community groups and volunteers

The Big Fig is offering free cookery classes for community groups and volunteers.

The aim of these courses are to promote the benefits of healthy eating and to create a better understanding of how to prepare healthy food. Students will also be able to demonstrate enhanced knowledge and skills in cookery and work related areas, improving their employability. The courses are delivered in a way that provides both practical work in the kitchen and classroom-based exercises. During the course the learners will be able to create a nutritionally balanced meal plan and help prepare a healthy meal. Courses can be tailored to meet the needs of the learners. At the end of each course, learners will receive photos of their meals, a copy of their meal plan and a certificate of achievement. Each course will run for a total 6 hours over one or two days depending on your requirements.
The Catering Project at the Big Fig can run outreach healthy cookery training in a variety of locations and course are for disadvantaged learners (age 16+) or those who are volunteering in community groups or community cafes.
