This two day course is organised by the Trust for Developing Communities and Brighton & Hove City Council.

The course gives an overview of different ways to work with communities and then supports participants to develop their own approach and test it out. So it would directly support any work with communities you are doing.

The course is also a great opportunity to network with and learn from other people from different sectors in the city who are working with communities.

It is well established and past participants really enjoy the participative nature of the course and the way it focuses on the work they are currently doing.

The Brighton and Hove City Council Community Learning team are delighted to be able to offer a free first aid for babies and children course for your community group. The three hour course is an opportunity for you to feel more confident about what to do in an emergency situation with children. The course is offered by a qualified Red Cross approved tutor, and a resource booklet is also available at the end of the course to support the learning.

The course covers:

• Managing burns and scalds
• How to deal with choking
• The recovery position
• Basic life support for children and babies

We offer the course on a Thursday and the session runs for three hours. Feedback from people completing the course has highlighted that this is a vital course for anyone who wants to increase their confidence in emergency situations.

Community Works free training for small organisations: Getting to Grips with Monitoring and Evaluation and the Community Insight Tool

Cost: This training is free, but will be prioritised to Community Works members

This training is aimed specifically at groups:

• With an income of under £35,000 and who are receiving a grant through the Community Health Fund and/or who are delivering health and well-being activities
• Priority will be given to those groups whose health and well-being activities support LGBT people, people from BME communities or older people (including intergenerational work)

This half-day course is a back to basics for anyone who is involved in or new to monitoring and evaluation, or who wants a refresher to improve the quality of their work. It will also include a demonstration of the Community Insight Tool (http://brighton-hove.communityinsight.org/), which allows you to find, explore and use a wide range of facts and figures at different geographic levels for Brighton and Hove. By the end of the course you will be able to:

• Measure success against the aims and objectives of your organisation
• Set a baseline against which to monitor and evaluate future work and use the Community Insight Tool to help you do this
• Set and measure outputs, outcomes and milestones
• Use different qualitative and quantitative monitoring techniques
• Use the information you have gathered to critically evaluate your work
• Begin to convince funders and commissioners of the added value of your work.

Techniques covered will include record keeping, questionnaires and evaluation forms, focus groups, interviewing and other participatory methods of collecting information about your activities or services. There will also be an opportunity to talk about building relationships with your funders.

If you volunteer at a community cafe or any other group that involves cooking, then you can get free training on healthy eating from the Big Fig Catering Project at Care Coops.

The aim of the course is  to help volunteers who are working with food in community settings to better understand the importance of healthy eating, meal planning and how clients and customers can be supported to make healthy eating decisions for themselves.

These courses are run by Brighton Housing Trust. They cost £65/day for registered charities with an annual turnover of less than £200,000, or fewer than ten employed staff.

This one day event run by Community Works aims to explore the complexity of equality, diversity, identity and human rights issues whether you are new to these issues or have been working with them for a good while.

The day will include a chance to get to know the Equalities Act (2010). There will also be discussion to help participants develop a deeper understanding of current issues, including: identity politics, cultural appropriation, poverty, justice, fairness, law, policy and procedure, rights and responsibilities.

The day is aimed at anyone from the voluntary and community sector who wants to develop their understanding further, and share their experiences. By the end of this session, participants will:

• have advanced their knowledge on the issues relating to equalities
• have gained greater understanding and awareness of the complexities around the ‘equalities agenda’

The Trust for Developing Communites has a few places left on their Working with Communities training. These are taking place on various dates in January 2016:

Wednesday 13th January – one day course for those already working with communities or who are too busy to attend the two day course.

Tuesday 19th January 2016 with day two on 1st March – a two day course supporting participants to design and test out their own approach to working with a community

Thursday 4th February with day two on 17th March, this course is particularly focussed on the role of teams, leaders and trustees when working with communities.

The course is only £50 for organisations with a turnover above £35k and free for smaller groups.
