Our Decision (Safer Recruitment) training on Friday 14th March 2014

Location: Brighthelm Church and Community Centre

Aim of course: To support VCS organisations with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) application process and effective decision-making related to the level of supervision and DBS checking required for different roles.

Objectives:

  • To raise awareness of the cultural change needed within the VCS following the launch of the DBS
  • To discuss the implications of this change for risk management
  • To work through case examples on supervision and consider the implications for your organisation and the wider sector
  • To explore the DBS application process and common errors
  • To identify resources and support to help your organisation meet this challenge
  • To identify next steps for your organisation
Online Safety training on Friday 14th March 2014

Aim of course: To increase organisational awareness of e-safety and access to resources

Objectives:

  • To identify the trends in use of online technologies by children and young people
  • To explore the impact of technology on the lives of children and young people
  • To provide strategies to support e-safety work within organisations

  • To encourage self-review of e-safety and develop further professional development

Safeguarding for Trustees training on Thursday 3rd April 2014.

Aim of this course: To enable trustees of registered charities and directors of unincorporated groups, mutuals and cooperatives to understand their safeguarding responsibilities towards children and young people

Objectives:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an awareness of the safeguarding issues that could emerge in their organisation;
  • Describe key principles and best practice in terms of their responsibilities to safeguard children and young people involved with their organisation;
  • Understand the impact of individuals values on safeguarding within the organisation;
  • Identify resources to help them and their staff/volunteers to safeguard children and young people;
  • Identify next steps for themselves and their organisation in terms of meeting their safeguarding responsibilities.

Free ‘Grow your idea’ Workshop

Justlife CIC are hosting a 2 day workshop to help you turn your ideas into reality.

The workshop will be run over 2 Saturdays (15th March and 5th April) 9.30am to 5pm, and will be an interactive, inspiring and potentially life changing time run by the Grow Ideas team.

The sessions are open to anyone who has an idea in its early stages, or one that has been brewing for a while but needs a kickstart, or even for those who don’t have an idea but want to find one! This could be a charity, community project, social enterprise or business.

Alternatively you may be someone who has started a charity, community project or business and you would be interested in mentoring others starting out, we would love you to join us! The days will be free and will include lunch and refreshments.

Free funding clinic for sports groups

Brighton & Hove Council Sports Development Team. Sported, and Active Sussex are hosting a free sports funding clinic on Tuesday 18th March 2014 at St Richards Church and Community Centre in Hove.

 

The event will run from 6.30pm – 9.00pm, suitable for all community & voluntary organisations who provide sport or physical activity. They are particularly keen to welcome groups who provide sports activities for children and young people in the city

 

The funding clinic gives you an opportunity to meet funders and find out about the type of work and projects they are able to fund.

Free help for BME groups on Lottery Heritage funding bids

FREE advice and support is available for BME groups in Brighton and Hove and East/West Sussex to help develop successful heritage lottery funding bids.

This course is an introduction to safeguarding and child protection issues for those working in small community groups. You will gain a basic understanding of your role in establishing a safe environment and safe working practices in protecting children and young people from harm and abuse

Protective Behaviours

Protective Behaviours is a personal safety and life skill process that teaches the ability to recognise and deal with situations in which we don’t feel safe. It can be used as both an abuse prevention strategy and to address situations such as feeling worried or bullied, as well as promoting good citizenship.

This two day course teaches an ability to recognise when we are not feeling safe and provides skills and tools to enable individuals to take action and get help when they need it. It also recognises that life is about taking risks and trying new things and that this is part of our personal development and an important life skill.

Supervising to Safeguard

This course is suitable for all managers who, as part of their role, have responsibility for both supervision of staff and safeguarding children.

This half day programme is designed to support managers in developing their supervision practice to promote safe effective practice in a children’s service or organisation, in line with their organisation’s supervision policy. There will be opportunities to build on existing skills and deepen understanding alongside managers from other professional backgrounds.

Safeguarding and Child Protection

This course is for anyone who works with or has significant contact with children or young people. Participants will gain an understanding of their role in establishing a safe environment and safe working practices in protecting children and young people from harm and abuse. The course will also look at identifying signs that a child might be at risk and responding to keep the child and themselves safe. It will also cover background information about the law and child protection. (Formerly called Child Protection Level 1).

B&H Council Annual Grants to Smaller Organisations: Deadlines announced

Brighton and Hove City Council is now inviting applications to the Annual Grants Programme 2014-15. This year’s deadlines are: 14 March, 4th July, 3rd October.

Please also note that applicants requesting funding for projects and events taking place before September 2014 should apply by 14 March deadline to ensure they have grant approval in time to support them.

Tree Council grants for Orchard Planting

Community groups and schools can apply for £100-£700 from the Tree Council to plant apple and pear trees, through the Orchard Windfalls Fund.

The trees must be planted on publicly accessible land (usually owned by a local authority, school or charity).

The actual planting must take place during National Tree Week (29th November – 7th December 2014) and must involve children and young people aged under 16.

Eligible costs include the cost of the trees and any reasonable cost of necessary supports and aids: stakes, ties, guards, fertiliser, mulch and soil amelioration (where conditions make this appropriate).

Application deadline is 31st March 2014.
