Community Works Members’ Autumn Conference: Understanding Impact: Approaches to monitoring and evaluation

At this Conference, each of Community Works’ 5 networks will be themed around monitoring and evaluation.

Gannett Foundation 2014 deadline announced

The Gannett Foundation is now accepting applications from charities in the areas served by Gannett Company newspapers (Gannett owns the Argus, so this includes Brighton & Hove).

You can apply for up to £10,000, for “projects which take a creative approach to fundamental issues such as education and neighbourhood improvements, economic development, youth development, community problem solving, assistance to disadvantaged people, environmental conservation and cultural enrichment”.

Promote your Social Enterprise at local event

This event, organised by the Brighton & Hove Social Enterprise Network in conjunction with Social Enterprise UK and Brighton & Hove City Council, will take place to raise awareness of the vast array of social enterprises operating within the city, and encourage consumers to unleash their spending power and buy from social enterprises. Featuring social enterprise stalls, entertainment and refreshments from local social enterprises.

All social enterprises are welcome to come along and to get involved with the network.

Date: Saturday 13th September 2014

Time: 11am until 5pm

Location: Jubilee Square

Life more ordinary – grants for young disabled people

The Life More Ordinary Grant Scheme has just launched. This scheme is aimed at helping young disabled people aged 8–19 to make new friends, enjoy social and leisure-time activities, take part in new experiences and lead a ‘life more ordinary’.

The deadline for applications is Monday 29th September.

Applications are welcome from any voluntary, community or statutory organisation​ in East Sussex – you can apply for any amount from £300 up to £3,500 ​(funding is available for up to 90% of the total cost of your project).

Sussex Community Foundation – Round 3 grants deadline 11 October

Round 3 list of grant funds from Sussex Community Foundation is now available. The deadline for applications is 11th October.

This is a larger round than usual for SCF as they have a number of additional smaller annual funds available.

Social Enterprise Events in September

There are two events in September for Social Enterprises and those organisations who are thinking of adding an income stream through trading.

1. Friday the 12th September: 9.30 to 1.30 pm Wagner Hall. 9 Russell Place, Brighton, BN1 2RG.

At this free event there will be key speakers and workshops for social enterprises and plenty of support organisations on hand to offer advice on issues from funding to growing your social enterprise as well as how to get involved with the social enterprise strategy to make Brighton and Hove a beacon for social enterprise by 2020.

This event will also launch a dedicated website for Brighton social enterprise which has been built to provide resources and a directory to signpost social enterprises, funders, customers and supporters to each other.

2. Saturday 13th September 2014: Jubilee Square Brighton 11am until 5pm

Social Saturday in conjunction with Social Enterprise UK will take place to raise awareness of social enterprise and encourage consumers to unleash their spending power and buy from social enterprises, featuring social enterprise stalls, entertainment and refreshments from local social enterprises. Let us know if you would like a stall.

Community Works Social Enterprise Network would welcome you all along to both events and to get involved in the network.

NEW! Rounders set available to hire at Resource Centre

We now have a Rounder set available to hire. It includes a proper wooden rounders bat, standard and soft rounders balls, wooden stumps, cones for playing on hard surfaces, and line marker spray to mark out your pitch.

Fundraising training event – free for small charities

The FSI is organising a two day training event, which is free for small charities, covering useful fundraising skills and techniques.

  • Venue Bridge Community Centre, Lucraft Road, Moulsecoomb, Brighton BN2 4PN
  • Date 17th & 18th September 2014 (attend one day or both)
  • Time 9.30am-4.30pm (registration from 9.15am)
  • Cost The training and all delegate materials are free of charge to FSI Small Charity Members and Associate Members.  However we ask for a small contribution of £10 towards the cost of refreshments and lunch.
  • Deposit You will be asked to pay a deposit of £50 per delegate place on registration.  £40 of this will be refunded to you after you have attended the training event (£10 is retained towards the refreshment and catering costs).
  • Multiple bookings Courses last all day so you can only attend one session per day and delegates from the same organisation may not attend the same course as each other.

You need to join the FSI to access a free place at this event. This is free for small charities (annual turnover below £1.5M) – you have to be a registered charity to join).
